Technology companies face rising debt burdens amid high interest rates
Major technology corporations are accumulating significant debt, with estimates suggesting shadow debt in the sector has reached $2.7 trillion. Rising interest rates are forcing these companies to refinance existing obligations, shifting financial risk from corporate balance sheets to credit markets and capital providers.
Large firms including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle are currently issuing ten-year bonds with coupons ranging between 5.25% and 5.7%. Microsoft has notably not issued bonds with this specific maturity for six years. The increased cost of capital poses a liquidity and valuation challenge, as companies must now manage the cost of maintaining operations until cash flows stabilize.
In contrast to the debt pressures facing tech firms, Deutsche Börse has raised its 2026 forecasts due to the benefits of higher interest rates. The exchange increased its treasury result forecast by approximately €100 million and expects EBITDA to rise by 11% to around €3.9 billion.
