Technology impacts basketball game duration
The implementation of video officiating technology in professional basketball is leading to longer match durations. While these innovations aim to improve officiating accuracy, they create a tension between sporting justice and the modern demand for faster, more agile entertainment formats.
Video replay systems have been utilized in Spanish basketball since the 2006 Copa del Rey. This technology has since expanded to the EuroLeague and FIBA competitions. In the upcoming season, video support is set to extend to the Primera FEB and the Liga Femenina Endesa, further integrating the system into elite professional play.
