Technology tool sprawl challenges cybersecurity consolidation
Efforts by Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) to consolidate sprawling technology estates often fail due to organizational psychology rather than technical limitations. While leadership may attempt to reduce vendor counts and standardize stacks to save on licensing, new platforms frequently become additional tools rather than replacements for existing ones.
Successful technology decommissioning is difficult because changing mindsets is harder than changing toolsets. Resistance often stems from engineering teams facing slower workflows or departments relying on legacy APIs. Consequently, consolidation efforts frequently stall as exception requests allow redundant tools to persist despite executive mandates.
