Technology transforms management of rising product recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded 542 recalls and safety warnings in 2025, representing a 32 percent increase from the previous year. Managing these recalls has become increasingly complex due to fragmented supplier records, online resale markets, connected products, and decentralized customer data.
Artificial intelligence and modern data infrastructure are being utilized to transform recall management into a continuous monitoring operation. AI tools, specifically natural-language processing, can consolidate unstructured data from diverse sources such as warranty claims, repair notes, product reviews, and sensor logs. By grouping semantically similar descriptions—such as different terms for the same defect—and using anomaly-detection models, these systems can identify patterns that require human review, helping to distinguish genuine safety risks from unrelated spikes in returns or shipping damage.
