Venezuela advances earthquake recovery with housing, power restoration and international aid
A double earthquake struck Venezuela on 24 June, killing 5,546 people, collapsing 190 buildings and leaving thousands homeless, especially in La Guaira.
The government restored 98 % of electricity service in La Guaira by late July, after installing a 300 kV transformer in Naiguatá and deploying over 400 workers from the national electric system.
President‑appointed officials announced the start of a new housing programme, beginning construction of 1,721 (later reported as 1,875) homes for displaced families and targeting about 4,000 units by 2026, with soil‑stability studies for each site.
The Chilean NGO TECHO pledged to build 200 prefabricated emergency houses of 18 m² in 12 communities across six Venezuelan states, using a dry‑construction method that can be assembled in two days. TECHO has raised more than $400,000 toward a $1.5 million fundraising goal and involves over 50 volunteers in site selection and construction.
International partners, including the World Bank and UNDP, have been monitoring the recovery. World Bank representatives verified progress of the "Venezuela Renace" plan and the safe‑clearance operations for debris removal, while the Vicepresidency Sectorial of Science, Technology, Ecosocialism and Health coordinated the post‑disaster evaluation plan with the UN and other agencies.
