Teck Highland Valley Copper workers begin strike

Approximately 1,277 members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7619 at Teck Highland Valley Copper (HVC) near Kamloops, British Columbia, commenced a strike on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

The labor action follows the expiration of a collective agreement on September 30. Negotiations, which began in June, stalled after recent attempts to reach a deal on October 21 and 22 failed. The union cited disagreements over wages, pensions, staff shortages, and retention, stating that the company’s current offer does not reflect its financial success.

Teck Resources reported that the Highland Valley Copper operation is running at reduced capacity due to the strike. The company stated that its contingency plans prioritize safety and environmental management during the disruption. The union previously secured a strike mandate with a 100 per cent favorable vote among participating members.
