TecLab modders run GeForce RTX 5090 using 8-pin connectors

Modders from the Brazilian group TecLab have successfully demonstrated that the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 can operate using traditional 8-pin power connectors instead of the standard 12V-2x6 16-pin connector.

To achieve this, the team utilized custom-made copper plates to interface with the GPU. In one configuration using three 8-pin connectors, the card approached the power levels typically provided by a single 600W 16-pin cable. Remarkably, the tests showed the GPU could function with as few as two 8-pin connectors while managing power consumption exceeding 770W, which is significantly higher than the NVIDIA Founders Edition's Total Graphics Power (TGP) of 575W.

While the experiment showed the card could reach high clock speeds—even exceeding 3,200 MHz with a single 8-pin cable in some tests—the modders noted that pushing such high wattage through fewer cables exceeds recommended specifications and could be dangerous. However, during the specific tests, cable temperatures remained relatively low, staying below 25°C in certain configurations.
