Ted Chiang to discuss immortality and capitalism in Sydney
Science fiction author Ted Chiang will deliver a keynote address on November 8 at the Powerhouse Parramatta opening festival in Sydney. The Hugo Award-winning writer is expected to address themes of billionaires, capitalism, and the ethics of pursuing immortality.
Chiang has raised questions regarding the motivations of ultra-wealthy individuals currently interested in biohacking and longevity treatments. He noted that many of those pursuing immortality appear to be “the worst people in the world,” questioning whether one would truly want to spend eternity in their company. He also observed that the ultra-rich already possess a form of temporal advantage through their ability to outsource mundane tasks.
