Cruz argued that the party must engage in a robust debate regarding its future direction, specifically concerning foreign policy—deciding between isolationism and American leadership—and economic principles, such as whether to remain a small-government, free-market party.

President Trump has commented on the matter, describing Cruz as a “very talented” and “very good friend” who “might” pursue the presidency. While some reports suggested Trump has privately signaled support for Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump denied these reports in the Oval Office, stating it is too early to consider the 2028 field. Other potential contenders mentioned in discussions include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
