Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott face backlash over anti-Sharia rhetoric

Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Texas Governor Greg Abbott have drawn criticism from Muslim American civic leaders following recent political rhetoric regarding Sharia law. During a Republican event in Dallas, Cruz stated that “Sharia law has no place in America,” while Abbott vowed to “fully ban Sharia law in Texas.”

In response, Muslim American scholars and community leaders are defending the practice of Sharia in the United States. They argue that Sharia serves as a personal religious code for worship, prayer, and virtue, similar to other religious frameworks. Sabeel Ahmed, director of the outreach project GainPeace, noted that Sharia is often misunderstood as being solely about punishment rather than being a guide for living with faith and justice.

Separately, Senator Cruz has utilized divisive language regarding Democratic voters and political opponents. In a Fox News interview, Cruz attributed potential Republican midterm losses to energized left-wing activists and claimed the Democratic Party is facing a “hostile takeover from Islamists and communists.” These comments come amid polling that indicates significant voter dissatisfaction with current economic conditions and the administration.
