Ted Ewald receives lifetime teaching ban in British Columbia

Ted Ewald, a former teacher with School District 82 in British Columbia, has agreed to a lifetime ban from any teaching position requiring a provincial qualification certificate. The ban follows a consent resolution agreement with the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation after Ewald admitted to a sexual relationship with a former student.

According to the agreement, Ewald, who taught outdoor education at Caledonia Secondary and Parkside Secondary, maintained contact with a vulnerable student after their graduation. Approximately five months after the student graduated, Ewald took the individual on an overnight trip during which they had sexual intercourse. The relationship continued for roughly six months before Ewald ended the contact by blocking the student on his phone.

The Commissioner determined that Ewald violated his privileged position of power and trust. In the agreement, Ewald acknowledged that his conduct was unbecoming of a teacher, noting that educators are held to a higher standard and must serve as role models.
