TEEM President discusses electoral justice challenges
Arlen Siu Jaime Merlos, President of the Electoral Tribunal of the State of Mexico (TEEM), addressed the progress and challenges of electoral justice during the I National Congress of Electoral Law in Saltillo, Coahuila.
During a panel discussion, Jaime Merlos noted that Mexican electoral justice has transitioned from the formal recognition of rights to their effective protection. She cited the “Juanitas” case as a milestone that strengthened women's political rights by preventing their substitution after meeting representation quotas. She also highlighted advancements in gender parity and affirmative action.
Key remaining challenges identified include ensuring accessibility for vulnerable populations and the effectiveness of judicial rulings. To address these barriers, the TEEM has operated an Electoral Public Defender's Office since 2023 to provide assistance and guidance to those facing significant obstacles to justice.
