Teen driver sentenced to 7.5 years for fatal Murrumba Downs crash

An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for the manslaughter of 69-year-old Rosemary Franzidis. The fatal incident occurred on November 7, 2024, in Murrumba Downs, north of Brisbane, when the driver, who was 16 at the time, struck Mrs. Franzidis’ vehicle with a stolen car traveling at speeds exceeding 130km/h.

The court heard that the driver was unlicensed and under the influence of drugs at the time of the collision. In a victim impact statement delivered at the Brisbane Supreme Court, Jean-Paul Franzidis, the husband of the deceased, expressed his grief but offered a message of compassion to the driver, stating his wish that the young man finds love in his life.

Justice Kerri Mellifont noted the generosity of the Franzidis family toward the defendant. The driver had also previously pleaded guilty to several other offenses, including assault and unlawful entry while pretending to be armed.
