Karmelo Anthony sentenced to 35 years for murder of Austin Metcalf in Texas

A Collin County jury found 19‑year‑old Karmelo Anthony guilty of first‑degree murder for fatally stabbing 17‑year‑old Austin Metcalf during a high‑school track meet in Frisco, Texas, on April 2 2025. The jury deliberated for less than three hours on June 9 2026 and rejected Anthony’s self‑defence claim, imposing a 35‑year prison term with eligibility for parole after serving half. Victim‑impact statements were read by Metcalf’s parents, twin brother and aunt, expressing deep loss and forgiveness for the perpetrator. Anthony’s parents defended their son and his mother pleaded for mercy. Supporters of Anthony later harassed the Metcalf family outside the courthouse, and racial overtones were debated in the media. Anthony has filed a notice of appeal, and a new mugshot shows him transferred to the Wallace Pack Unit near Houston to begin his sentence.
