Christian Cappannelli dies after severe crash on Pian d'Assino road

Christian Cappannelli, a 22‑year‑old resident of Gubbio, died at the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Perugia following a violent front‑collision on the SS 219 Pian d’Assino near Padule during the night of 12‑13 June. He was travelling in an Alfa Romeo 159 with his 19‑year‑old girlfriend when the vehicle collided head‑on with a Ford Fiesta driven by a 24‑year‑old. Emergency crews, including fire‑fighters, spent about an hour extracting him from the wreckage, after which he was air‑lifted to Perugia in critical condition and succumbed on 14 June.

The incident raised renewed concerns over the safety of the Pian d’Assino stretch, which has recorded 27 deaths since its opening 22 years ago. Local officials and community members expressed deep mourning, highlighting Cappannelli’s involvement in local cultural traditions and calling for improved road safety measures.
