Teenage footballer Rayan Lawaj dies after road accident in Bergamo

Rayan Lawaj, a 14-year-old football player for the Tritium club, has died following a road accident in the province of Bergamo, Italy. The incident occurred on Tuesday night around 10:40 PM on the SP 498 road in the Ghisalba area while the teenager was walking home from football training.

Lawaj was struck by an Alfa Romeo Giulietta driven by a 38-year-old man. While alcohol tests for the driver returned negative, authorities are awaiting results from drug screenings. The driver has been placed under investigation for road homicide. Following the boy's death at the Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital, his parents consented to organ donation.

The local mayor, Pasquale Busetti, has highlighted the extreme danger of the SP 498, noting its narrow roadway. The Tritium football club expressed deep condolences, with the sporting director noting the challenges faced by young players traveling long distances for training.
