Teenager arrested after stabbing six-year-old in Umhlali classroom

A 16-year-old boy is in custody following a violent attack at a special needs learning centre in Umhlali, KwaZulu-Natal. During the incident, the teenager forced his way into a classroom and stabbed a six-year-old girl multiple times. The child suffered punctures to her lungs, liver, and intestines, requiring intensive care and surgery, though she has since been reported to have made a full recovery.

The suspect appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court facing charges of attempted murder, housebreaking with intent to murder, and trespassing. His legal representative announced that he would not apply for bail, and he remains remanded at the Durban Youth Correctional Centre. The case has been postponed to October 30 for further investigation.

Investigators have linked the teenager to online subcultures that glorify mass killers. A manifesto attributed to the suspect expressed admiration for the Columbine High School attackers and cited digital true crime communities as inspiration. Police also noted the suspect had previously faced charges related to an incident involving an improvised explosive device at a regional mall in March.
