Teenager rescued from Canadian cliff after using AI to plan hike
A 16-year-old hiker, Bryce Vincent Gowryluk, required a helicopter rescue after becoming trapped on a cliff at Crown Mountain in British Columbia, Canada. The incident occurred after the teenager used Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, to help plan a new hiking route.
Gowryluk mistakenly identified the Widowmaker Arete—a steep, technical climbing area requiring specialized equipment—as the Crown Couloir, which was his intended path. After attempting to navigate the terrain, he found himself unable to continue or safely retreat, eventually becoming stuck on a rock ledge approximately 1.5 meters wide.
North Shore Rescue conducted the helicopter operation to extract him from the vertical wall. Paul Markey, a search official with the rescue team, noted that a fall from that location could have resulted in serious injury or death. Gowryluk stated he does not blame the AI, noting he also used Google Maps and AllTrails, and accepted responsibility for the navigational error.
