Teenager suffers 98% kidney loss due to excessive bubble tea consumption
A 14-year-old boy in Henan, China, has suffered irreversible kidney damage, losing 98% of his kidney function due to acute kidney failure. He was admitted to the first affiliated hospital of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in a deep coma, and his heart briefly stopped shortly after arrival, requiring emergency resuscitation.
Medical tests revealed critical levels, with creatinine soaring to 3500 (normal range is 40 to 80) and a glomerular filtration rate of only 1.7 (standard is 100 to 120). Doctors identified the cause as severe dietary habits: the teenager consumed fast food once or twice daily and drank two to three large cups of bubble tea every day, often using the sugary drinks as his primary source of liquid instead of water.
