Tegucigalpa celebrates 448 years of history and foundation

Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, is celebrating its 448th anniversary of foundation on September 29. The city's origins are deeply rooted in the colonial era, specifically linked to the discovery of gold and silver veins in the region. Its name, derived from Nahuatl, is often interpreted as “hill of silver.”

Historically, the city grew around mining settlements rather than through a traditional foundation charter. While it maintained a long-standing economic and political rivalry with Comayagua, Tegucigalpa was definitively established as the nation's political and administrative seat on October 30, 1880, during the presidency of Marco Aurelio Soto.

The anniversary coincides with the feast day of the city's patron saint, San Miguel Arcángel. Local officials, including Mayor Juan Diego Zelaya and former mayor Jorge Aldana, have highlighted the city's history, culture, and the ongoing challenges regarding its future development.
