Honduran siblings injured in explosion; cultural and educational updates
Two siblings, Olvin and Helen Carranza (ages 3 and 9), are in critical condition following an explosion at a small-scale gunpowder factory in San José, Copán. The incident, caused by an LPG gas leak during welding, injured four family members. The children are receiving specialized care at the Honduran Burned Child Center (Fundaniquem), and medical staff are evaluating a potential emergency transfer for the 3-year-old to a specialized hospital in the United States.
In cultural news, Emely Alemán represented Honduras at the Miss Grand International 2026 competition in Bangkok, Thailand. Her national costume, inspired by the folklore legend ‘El Cadejo,’ featured a transformative design that transitioned from a dark creature to a figure with golden details and white and orange wings.
In Colombia, Diageo and the Mariano Moreno Gastronomy School have launched the ‘Learning for Life’ program. This initiative offers 100% free scholarships for training in hospitality, including service, mixology, and sales, to boost employability in the sector.
