Tegucigalpa municipal authorities to drill 30 new wells to combat water crisis

The Alcaldía Municipal del Distrito Central (AMDC) announced plans to drill more than 30 new water wells in Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela to address a severe drought that has left thousands of families without adequate supply. The agency identified roughly 30–31 potential sites, with six locations ready for immediate drilling based on land‑tenure and geological conditions. In addition, AMDC will rehabilitate 41 existing wells that have been out of service due to lack of maintenance.

The project will use municipal machinery and support from the construction firm Copeco, keeping costs low by only incurring fuel and oil expenses. Negotiations are also underway with four private well owners to integrate their wells into the public distribution system. One of the first drilling sites is the former National Penitentiary grounds. The goal is to begin work within the month and provide an alternative water supply before the situation worsens.
