Tegucigalpa police cancel plans to use dog Zeus for operations

The Municipal Police of the Central District in Tegucigalpa has officially decided not to incorporate a dog named Zeus into its operational canine squad. This decision follows a fatal incident in the Hato de Enmedio neighborhood, where the dog attacked an elderly citizen who subsequently died from their injuries.

Prior to the attack, authorities had planned to train Zeus for pyrotechnics control operations during the November and December holiday seasons, utilizing the animal's aptitude for detecting gunpowder. However, Josué Esperanza, the deputy director of the police force, stated that the institution has abandoned all operational plans for the animal to prioritize public safety.

Zeus will remain under municipal custody at the former Central Penitentiary facilities, where he will undergo a specialized behavioral rehabilitation process. This process, supported by a canine behavior specialist, is expected to last at least two months. The dog will be kept in an exclusive area, separated from other people and animals, to mitigate the risk of further incidents.
