Tegucigalpa water crisis: Artículo 19 demands investigation into cistern water quality

Darwin Ponce, president of the organization Artículo 19, has called for an investigation into the origin and quality of water sold via private cistern trucks in Tegucigalpa. He raised concerns regarding the lack of oversight for these commercial operations, noting that prices for water loads have reached up to 2,000 lempiras in various sectors of the Central District.

Ponce emphasized the need for authorities to verify if the water being distributed is safe for human consumption and to identify the specific sources, such as wells, being used by vendors. He warned that operating without adequate supervision poses a public health risk.

Additionally, Ponce criticized the management of the current water scarcity crisis, arguing that authorities failed to implement long-term water catchment and storage projects. He urged institutions to provide concrete actions and accountability regarding the funds allocated to address the drought and the resulting emergency.
