Tegut supermarket chain to exit German market

The German supermarket chain Tegut is withdrawing from the German market, a decision made by its Swiss owner, Migros Zurich. The retailer, which operates nearly 300 branches across six German federal states—primarily in Hesse—is looking to sell its locations to competitors.

Most stores are expected to be taken over by rival chains such as Edeka, Rewe, and Netto, which plan to renovate and reopen the sites under new branding. However, the future of approximately 36 locations remains uncertain, as no buyers have yet been secured; these sites will be sold via auction.

The withdrawal follows long-term economic challenges and intense competition. The move affects approximately 7,500 employees. To mark the exit, Tegut has offered significant discounts to customers, including 30% off most private-label products, with some locations previously offering up to 50% off certain stock.
