Tehran City Council discusses public transport fares and urban safety
Mehdi Chamran, Chairman of the Tehran City Council, stated during a council meeting that there is currently no necessity to keep metro and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services free of charge. He noted that while the continuation of free public transport depends on the council's decision, the financial burden of providing these services is significant and difficult to compensate.
The council is also reviewing a plan to mandate the Tehran Municipality to construct and operate urban safety spaces and shelters. Regarding school reopenings and safety, Chamran clarified that since integrated urban management has not yet been implemented, the responsibility for schools remains with the Ministry of Education. He noted that the Ministry is responsible for ensuring schools reopen on time and for the reconstruction of school shelters, though the municipality may assist where necessary.
Other agenda items for the council include reports on neighborhood development in District 15 and addressing challenges related to orchards in the Kon, Kohsar, Farahzad, Hesarak, and Letman areas.
