Tehran water reservoirs show mixed levels amid national rainfall increases

Recent data from the Iran Water Resources Management Company reveals a complex water situation across Iran. While national dam inflows for the 1405-1406 water year have reached 1.19 billion cubic meters—a 77 percent increase compared to the same period last year—regional disparities remain significant.

In the Tehran province, dam levels show varying degrees of stability. The Amir Kabir Dam is the only reservoir in a favorable condition, with a 70 percent capacity level (126 million cubic meters), representing a 567 percent increase over the previous year. In contrast, the Lar Dam is in a critical state, holding only 3 percent of its capacity (33 million cubic meters). Other regional reservoirs include the Taleghan Dam at 39 percent, the Latian Dam at 29 percent, and the Mamlu Dam at 11 percent.

Nationwide, although total reservoir storage has increased by 29 percent compared to last year, water scarcity persists in eastern and northeastern Iran. Dams such as Doosti and Torogh in Razavi Khorasan, and Barzou in North Khorasan, continue to face low reserves. Experts warn that even with increased rainfall, the reliance on groundwater in these regions remains a concern due to risks like land subsidence.
