Tehran motorcycle accidents cause 178 deaths in six months
Tehran Traffic Police reported that 23,178 motorcycle accidents occurred in the capital during the first half of the year. These incidents resulted in 178 deaths, with motorcyclists accounting for 48 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in Tehran.
Authorities identified head injuries, often caused by the failure to wear helmets, as the primary cause of death. The statistics also include 9,086 accidents resulting in injuries and 13,914 accidents involving property damage. Common violations cited by police include riding on sidewalks, running red lights, sudden lane changes, and concealing license plates.
Cultural activist Kourosh Aliani noted that for many, motorcycles are essential tools for livelihood rather than leisure. He highlighted a lack of recent data regarding the number of workers dependent on motorcycles for income, noting that a decade ago, officials estimated 70 percent of Tehran's motorcyclists used them for work. Aliani argued that addressing safety requires looking beyond helmet recommendations to the social and economic pressures faced by delivery workers.
