Tekirdağ hospital project implements advanced earthquake damping system

A new oncology and palliative care hospital being constructed by Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University is utilizing a Buckling-Restrained Brace (BRB) system to ensure continuous service during seismic events. Developed in collaboration with Japanese scientists, this system uses metal-based dampers to absorb earthquake energy, reducing the risk of structural damage.

According to Dr. Öğretim Üyesi Ahmet Bal, Head of Construction and Technical Affairs at the university, this application is unique as it integrates the BRB system into the design phase of a reinforced concrete structure, whereas it is typically used for retrofitting existing buildings or in steel structures. The goal is to allow medical staff to continue critical procedures, such as surgeries, with minimal perception of tremors, ensuring the facility remains operational even during significant earthquakes.
