Tekirdağ hosts meeting for Turkish and Greek population exchange descendants

Descendants of the Turkish and Greek population exchange gathered in the Semetli neighborhood of Tekirdağ's Süleymanpaşa district for the traditional 'Kırçma' meeting. The event, organized by the Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality and the Thrace and Işıklar Village Thessaloniki Exchanged Population and Balkan Turks Association, celebrates the end of the harvest season.

A communal table for 1,000 people was set up in the village square to foster cultural ties and friendship. The ceremony commenced with the playing of both the Turkish and Greek national anthems. Participants shared traditional meals and discussed the importance of preserving their shared history and cultural heritage for future generations.

Lagos Nikos, Deputy Mayor of Nea Rodosto, Greece, expressed emotional sentiments regarding the visit to the lands once inhabited by their ancestors and thanked the local organizers for their hospitality. Olcay Ceylan, President of the organizing association, noted that the Kırçma tradition serves to celebrate agricultural abundance and the spirit of communal labor.
