Turkey legal updates: DNA identification and various criminal court rulings

Several legal developments and criminal cases have been reported in Turkey.

In Avcılar, the family of Oğuzhan Tekin has identified him through a 99.9% DNA match. Tekin disappeared in December 2017, and an unidentified body found in the sea shortly after was buried in a pauper's cemetery. His father is now requesting a formal exhumation to determine the cause of death.

In Ankara, the court released the reasoned decision regarding the death of Sema Esen, known as Aleyna Çakır. Defendant Ümitcan Uygun was sentenced to four years in prison for “inciting suicide and reinforcing the decision to commit suicide.” While the court found evidence of systematic psychological and physical pressure during their relationship, it ruled there was insufficient evidence of murder.

Other notable cases include the first hearing for the murder of 16-year-old Erkan Karadeniz in Tekirdağ, where the suspect claimed mental instability. In Adana, a man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of his bedridden mother. Additionally, the trial regarding the death of Reşit Kibar, who was killed while protesting tree cutting in Borçka, has been postponed to January 22.

In Istanbul, the Saturday Mothers continued their protest, specifically seeking information regarding the fate of İbrahim Gündem, who was taken into custody in Diyarbakır in 1991.
