Yair Golan faces suspected knife attack during Israeli elections

During election day in Tel Aviv, a man carrying a large knife was detained near Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats party, during a campaign appearance at Railway Park. The Democrats party reported that security guards intercepted the individual after he approached Golan in a threatening manner, at which point a knife fell from his clothing. Golan characterized the incident as an attempt to intimidate him, attributing the tension to political incitement.

Israel Police issued a clarification disputing the characterization of an attempted assassination, stating that officers detained the suspect after noticing a suspicious object concealed under his clothing. Police noted there was no evidence at that stage that an attack had been initiated. The suspect, identified as a Jerusalem resident in his twenties, was known to authorities from previous incidents involving weapons.

The incident occurred amid high voter turnout for the Knesset elections, with reports indicating turnout reached 44.9% by mid-afternoon, a record for that time in the country's history. Political tensions remain high as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leaders compete for control of the 120-seat parliament.
