Telč event advocates for animal welfare legislative reform

In Telč, representatives from animal shelters and the 'Pusť je domů' (Let Them Home) initiative held a public event to highlight legislative hurdles facing rescued animals. Using the four-ton wire sculpture 'Vulpes' by artist František Skála as a centerpiece, organizers placed a massive, 60-kilogram toy made of old tires and rags next to the statue to symbolize the long, stagnant wait animals face for new homes.

Michaela Zemánková, director of the Dogpoint shelter, explained that animals seized due to abuse or neglect often remain in a legal vacuum. Because they technically still belong to their original owners until legal proceedings are finalized, shelters are often unable to place them with new families for months or even years. This delay occupies space in shelters and incurs costs for municipalities.

The initiative is currently supported by a petition that has gathered approximately 16,000 signatures, calling for legal reforms that would allow animals to be transferred to new care more quickly, even before legal proceedings are fully concluded.
