Telč honors Countess Františka Slavatová with new memorial

The town of Telč has unveiled a memorial plaque to honor Countess Františka Slavatová, a 17th-century noblewoman credited with the city's revitalization following the devastation of the Thirty Years' War and the Swedish invasion.

Slavatová, the Countess of Meggau, was a significant historical figure who served as a governess to the future Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. In Telč, she was instrumental in establishing the Jesuit complex, which includes the Church of the Name of Jesus and buildings that currently serve as a Masaryk University center.

The memorial, located in the courtyard of the university center, was funded through a combination of municipal and regional support alongside a public collection that raised 109,000 CZK from approximately 50 donors. To commemorate her legacy, the city has dedicated much of its 2026 cultural program to her, featuring exhibitions, lectures, and conferences. Additionally, a new park scheduled for completion next year will be named in her honor.
