Telangana BJP demands inclusion of Hyderabad liberation history in textbooks

The Telangana BJP has called on the state government to include the history of Operation Polo and ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ in school textbooks. BJP state chief N Ramchander Rao argued that the inclusion is necessary to ensure students understand the significance of the freedom movement and the integration of the former princely state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.

Speaking at a commemoration event, Rao criticized the current state government, including the BRS and Congress parties, alleging they avoid officially observing September 17 due to ‘vote-bank politics’. He noted that the military action, initiated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on September 13, 1948, was essential to liberating the region from the Nizam regime.

Rajya Sabha member K Laxman also supported the call, emphasizing that the current generation should learn about the sacrifices made during the struggle, specifically citing historical events such as the massacre at Bairanpally and the casualties in Nirmal.
