Telangana CM Revanth Reddy pushes to lower election age to 21
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has called for a constitutional amendment to reduce the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly elections from 25 to 21 years. He said the change would give the roughly 30% of India’s youth a proportionate voice, noting that they currently hold less than 1% of Lok Sabha seats.
Reddy announced that a special session of the Telangana Assembly and Legislative Council will be convened in the first week of August to pass a resolution on the proposal, after which the state will forward the resolution to the Union government and the Prime Minister. He also urged that the amendment be debated together with the pending delimitation, increase in Lok Sabha seats and women’s reservation bills.
In the same outreach, Reddy introduced the slogan “Jai Jawan – Jai Kisan – Jai Yuva” and said he will meet opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi to submit the proposal. He asked the Centre to revoke cases registered against students involved in the NEET protests and to compensate families of students who died after the exam paper leak. Citing Germany, the United Kingdom and Singapore, he argued that young people already hold high office in several democracies.
