Telangana Cyber Security Bureau warns of fake Diwali cash benefit scam

The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has issued an advisory regarding fraudulent WhatsApp messages circulating during the Diwali festive season. The messages falsely claim that the central government is providing an 8,000 rupee cash benefit to citizens, often using the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create a false sense of official legitimacy.

TGCSB Director Shikha Goel warned that the messages contain suspicious links designed to redirect users to fraudulent websites. These sites may attempt to steal sensitive information, including Aadhaar details, bank account numbers, and one-time passwords (OTPs), or facilitate unauthorized UPI transactions and install malicious software on mobile devices.

Authorities advise citizens to verify all government welfare schemes through official websites and authorized channels. Individuals who have already interacted with suspicious links are urged to secure their bank accounts and devices immediately. Victims of cyber fraud should contact their banks and report incidents via the official cybercrime portal or by calling 1930.
