Telangana: House demolished after inter-caste marriage

In the Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana, relatives of a woman allegedly used a tractor and excavators to demolish a portion of a house belonging to a Dalit man following his inter-caste marriage. The couple, Rangamuni, a driver, and Maheshwari, a student, had married in Hyderabad on September 9 after facing opposition from their families due to their different caste backgrounds.

The incident occurred in Repally village while the house was unoccupied. According to police, the man’s family had locked the residence to go about their daily work. The demolition caused significant tension in the village, prompting Gadwal police to deploy additional personnel to provide protection to the victim’s family and prevent further unrest.

Authorities stated that a criminal case will be registered and a detailed inquiry conducted. Gadwal DSP Mogilaiah emphasized that property destruction or social boycotts related to caste will not be tolerated, noting that those responsible could face charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
