Telangana Minister appeals to auto drivers to withdraw strike

Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has appealed to auto-rickshaw drivers to withdraw their proposed indefinite strike, which was scheduled to begin on August 24. The strike was organized by the Auto Union Joint Action Committee (JAC) to demand immediate welfare measures, including the formation of a welfare board, annual financial assistance, and accident insurance.

To address the drivers' concerns, the Minister announced that a special committee will be formed to study the demand for an increase in auto fares, noting that rates have not been significantly revised in years despite rising fuel and maintenance costs. The committee is expected to include representatives from auto unions and transport department officials.

Additionally, the government plans to establish a welfare board for auto workers and provide financial assistance of up to 1.50 lakh rupees to eligible drivers who transition to electric auto-rickshaws. The state aims to phase out petrol, diesel, and gas autos in favor of electric vehicles, particularly in Hyderabad, to reduce pollution. The Minister also mentioned plans to extend welfare benefits, such as ration cards, free electricity, and free bus travel, to eligible driver families.
