Yadadri Thermal Power Station faces coal shortage crisis in Telangana

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered officials to resolve a power generation crisis at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station by ensuring the plant reaches full capacity before the Dussehra festival. The station is currently facing a shortage of G9-grade coal, which is required for its specific boiler and combustion technology.

Officials reported that Singareni Collieries cannot supply the necessary G9-grade coal because it lacks the required coal blocks, a situation attributed to the previous government's failure to participate in coal block auctions. To address this, the Chief Minister directed the Energy Department to procure coal from Mahanadi Coalfields and Coal India.

The review also highlighted logistical and financial concerns. The plant was constructed away from coal pitheads, which officials stated was due to political decisions made during the previous BRS administration. This location choice has reportedly imposed an additional financial burden of approximately ₹40,000 crore on the state due to coal transportation costs. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has been instructed to coordinate with Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy to mitigate the crisis.
