Telangana politicians clash over Hyderabad water crisis

Political tensions have escalated in Telangana as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Congress government trade accusations regarding a severe drinking water shortage in Hyderabad.

BRS leaders inspected the Kannepalli Pump House and Medigadda Barrage, alleging that the current administration has allowed over 750 TMC ft of Godavari water to flow into the sea since June. They argued that pumping this water could have replenished reservoirs and mitigated the crisis, noting that Hyderabad residents are facing low water pressure and frequent shortages, with approximately 7,000 water tanker bookings recorded daily in October.

In response, Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy attributed the infrastructure failures to the previous BRS administration. He characterized the Kaleshwaram project as a result of corruption and incompetence, claiming that mismanagement and faulty designs led to the collapse of key components like the Medigadda Barrage. The Minister asserted that under the current Congress government, the utilization of Krishna and Godavari waters for agriculture has reached unprecedented levels.
