Telangana Prisons Department wins SKOCH Award for de-addiction initiative

The Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services Department has received the SKOCH Award 2026 for its NIVRUTTI de-addiction initiative. The award recognizes the department’s rehabilitation-oriented approach to addressing substance dependence among inmates.

Implemented with support from the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) under India’s Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the program aligns with the state’s goal of a drug-free Telangana. The initiative provides scientific treatment, counseling, and behavioral support at central prisons in Hyderabad, Cherlapalli, Sangareddy, Nizamabad, and the Special Prison for Women in Hyderabad.

To date, the program has screened 4,200 inmates for substance-use concerns, with 2,126 receiving WHO-ASSIST screening and treatment support. The initiative emphasizes continuity of care, including follow-ups with released prisoners to assist in their reintegration into society as productive citizens.
