Telangana rainfall deficit remains better than key Indian farm states

Telangana’s monsoon rainfall deficit reached 17 percent as of August 21, placing the state within the India Meteorological Department’s “normal” rainfall band. Despite the shortfall, the state has fared better than several major foodgrain-producing regions in India, such as Bihar, which has a 41 percent deficit, and Punjab, with a 32 percent deficit.

National rainfall is currently 13 percent below normal. While some states like Gujarat and West Bengal report surpluses or minimal deficits, others like Kerala and Assam face significant shortfalls.

Forecasts suggest a deteriorating outlook. Skymet has revised its seasonal rainfall forecast down to 85 percent of the Long Period Average, raising the probability of a nationwide drought to 70 percent. Additionally, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed established El Nino conditions. While current sowing progress for kharif crops remains satisfactory, experts warn that El Nino poses a significant risk to the upcoming rabi season.
