Telangana to draft Rohith Vemula Bill to curb caste discrimination
The Telangana government has established a three-month deadline to prepare a preliminary draft of the proposed Rohith Vemula Bill. The legislation is designed to prevent caste-based discrimination and protect the rights of students within universities and other higher educational institutions.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka directed the Scheduled Castes Development Department (SCDD) to lead the drafting process. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and legally sound framework, instructing officials to constitute a drafting committee and consult with various stakeholders, including students, faculty, legal experts, and civil society organizations.
To ensure technical and legal accuracy, the government plans to seek assistance from NALSAR University of Law. The drafting process will also involve coordination with the Law Department, the Education Department, the Home Department, and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
