Telangana to introduce smart electricity meters in phased rollout
The Telangana government is preparing to implement smart electricity meters across the state. The rollout will begin with all new electricity connections and will gradually expand to existing domestic and commercial consumers through a phased approach.
These smart meters are designed to automatically record monthly consumption and transmit data electronically to power distribution companies, facilitating timely billing. The government is also considering making prepaid smart meters mandatory for all government offices. However, concerns have been raised regarding the higher cost of smart meters compared to conventional models, with the possibility that the financial burden of installation could be passed on to consumers.
