Telecom and financial sectors face rising identity-based fraud
Global telecom fraud losses are projected to reach approximately $41 billion in 2025, according to the Communications Fraud Control Association. Experts note that while telecom operators are investing heavily in network security, a significant gap remains where network authentication ends and human trust begins.
Fraud is increasingly evolving from a transaction-based problem into an identity and trust problem. Criminals are utilizing social engineering, AI-enabled scams, and synthetic identities to exploit users. Because scammers often use fear or urgency to persuade victims to authorize payments themselves, these transactions can appear legitimate to traditional security systems.
Industry leaders suggest that current investments are often siloed within specific sectors. To combat these evolving threats, there is a growing need for cross-industry cooperation and a shift toward monitoring the entire customer journey—from onboarding and login to profile changes—rather than focusing solely on the final transaction.
