Telecom companies leverage AI for efficiency and cost savings

Telecommunications companies are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence to drive efficiency and cost savings, though experts warn of potential organizational risks. While AI tools can deliver measurable gains within individual departments—such as faster technical diagnoses or shorter reporting cycles—they may fail to address underlying organizational friction. If companies improve intelligence within isolated functions without reconsidering the boundaries between departments, AI may simply allow friction to move faster through the system.

Major operators are already reporting significant financial and operational metrics related to AI. Deutsche Telekom has set a target of €2.5 billion in indirect cost savings by 2030 through AI and automation across customer service, network operations, and administration. The company’s Frag Magenta chatbot handled approximately 2.6 million calls in the first half of 2026.

Other industry players are seeing similar trends. Vodafone reports that its AI virtual assistants achieve over 70 percent end-to-end resolution rates. In Africa, Airtel Africa’s MyAirtel app processed $8.3 billion in transactions during fiscal year 2026. In the United States, customer service calls have declined by 55 percent, with AI agents managing 40 percent of customer contacts.
