Telecom operators expand fiber infrastructure to support AI demands

Telecommunications operators are significantly restructuring their network architectures to meet the demands of the AI era. Major providers are investing heavily in fiber capacity, data centers, and low-latency connectivity to support GPU clusters and distributed inference.

AT&T has entered a multi-year agreement with Corning valued at over $3 billion to supply fiber and cable for network expansion. This move addresses rising data consumption, with AT&T projecting household usage could reach 2 to 2.5 TB per month by 2030. Similarly, Verizon has committed to an agreement with Corning covering over 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber between 2027 and 2032 to support both broadband expansion and long-haul routes for AI data centers.

In the rural sector, a study of 132 providers by the Fiber Broadband Association reveals a gap between expectation and implementation. While 91% of rural providers expect AI to significantly impact their business, only 1% have integrated AI into core systems. The primary barrier to adoption is identified as a lack of skills and confidence (68%) rather than cost or data quality.
