Telecom operators shift AI focus toward revenue generation

Telecom operators are increasingly shifting their artificial intelligence strategies from simple efficiency gains toward the development of new revenue streams. According to the AI-Native Telco Index report by TelecomTV, which evaluated 56 operators, only six companies primarily focused on efficiency in their public AI statements. In contrast, 28 operators maintained a balanced view of efficiency and monetization, while 20 focused primarily on revenue-generating efforts.

This shift occurs alongside concerns regarding a burgeoning ‘AI access divide.’ While internet connectivity remains a stubborn issue—with the ITU reporting 2 billion people remain offline globally—a secondary gap is emerging in AI utilization. Data from the Bank of America Institute indicates only 3% of US households pay for AI services, and Microsoft’s AI Economy Institute found that generative AI usage among working-age populations in developed economies (27.5%) is significantly higher than in developing economies (15.4%).

Experts suggest that as society considers subsidizing AI tools, telecom operators are positioned to become essential delivery infrastructure, similar to their role in broadband distribution.
