Telecommunications companies proposed to join NMHH leadership selection
An internal letter has surfaced regarding the selection process for the future president of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) and its Media Council. The document suggests involving the Telecommunications Interest Conciliation Council (HÉT) in the evaluation of candidates.
This proposal would allow representatives from major telecommunications companies, including Telekom, One (4iG Hungary), and Yettel, to participate in the selection process. Critics note that this could create potential conflicts of interest, as these market players are subject to the supervision and regulation of the very authority whose leadership is being chosen.
The initiative was reportedly proposed by Tibor Kovács, honorary president of the Association of Hungarian Publishers, acting on behalf of several professional regulatory organizations. While the law specifies that only media-related regulatory bodies should participate in the selection, the proposal argues that since the Media Council president also serves as the NMHH president, telecommunications industry perspectives should be included.
